The Icelandic Responsible Fisheries program (IRF) defended its national approach to eco-labeling at a seminar during the Fish International 2012 event in Bremen, Germany.

The mid-morning seminar met with both applause and criticism from those present.

Speakers  included Eggert Benedikt Gudmundsson (pictured), chair of the IRF marketing board and CEO of HB Grandi, one of Iceland’s largest fishing companies; Johann Sigurjonsson, director general at the Icelandic Marine Research Institute; and Peter Marshall, CEO of Global Trust Certification.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) model-based eco-certifications are criticized by its detractors as not being truly independent third-party accreditation.
