Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson, Iceland's foreign minister gave notice of Iceland's suspension of the application for European Union (EU) membership for an unspecified period, during a meeting in Brussels on Thursday.

He said both parties currently in power in Iceland are against a EU membership. "That's how democracy works," he said.

Under the previous government, Iceland came quite far in its application process. Negotiations were divided into 33 chapters, with about one third of these finalized.
