The new administration, formed of a coalition between Social Democrat and Left-Green parties, announced recalling quotas will commence on September 1, 2010. The process is predicted to take 20 years if 5 percent of present quotas are recalled annually to state ownership.
Those with interests at stake, notably vessel operators and local authorities, have been quick to respond and condemn the new government's policy.
In the run-up to the elections last month, the quota issue rose high on the agenda, and several of the larger companies went on record as saying recalling quotas would be disastrous for the industry.
