Steingrimur Sigfusson, minister of finance, fisheries and agriculture of the new coalition government, said he intends to examine how the increase in cod quota from 130,000 metric tons to 160,000 metric tons fits in with “counseling” from the Marine Research Institute, Iceland’s scientific advice body.
The new minister, who also heads the Left-Green Movement, is reported to have asked for documentation relating to the decision by the previous minister Einar Gudfinnsson to allow whaling to resume.
