By this time of year the migration is normally in full swing and processing plants should be busy freezing capelin for markets in Eastern Europe.

Last year's season, one of the smallest ever with only 149,000 metric tons landed, still resulted in export values of almost ISK 12 billion (€84 million/$105 million).

In a normal season, the roe-bearing capelin should also soon be ready for harvesting for the lucrative Japanese market.

But so far, in spite of some capelin already having been observed on the south coast shallows, the Marine Research Institute has not seen enough to recommend that the season should be allowed to start, in spite of a constant watch being kept on the south coast by pelagic vessels and research ship Arni Fridriksson.
