“[We] expect to see the first certification in place next year, with an impartial, independent body to look after the certification process,” said Kristjan Thorarinsson of Iceland’s Federation of Fishing Vessel Owners (IFFVO).
IFFVO, together with the Iceland Fisheries Association and other interested parties, including fish processing workers and fishermen, made the decision to seek a country eco-label in 2006, Thorarinsson said.
Svavar Svavarsson, marketing manager with Icelandic fisheries firm HB Grandi, told Fishing News International the plan is to launch the new eco-label at the Icelandic Fisheries Exhibition in Reykjavik in October.
