While there has been strong opposition from the vessel and quota owners under the leadership of the Icelandic Federation of Fishing Vessel Owners (LIU) to any changes to the existing system, the government's plans have a strong groundswell of support from the general public.
“The government's recall policy would lead to multiple bankruptcies among fishing companies, undoubtedly harming the national economy. This has been shown in a report by Deloitte last year that the government is aware of,” said a statement from LIU.
