Sanctions against the Faroe Islands to conserve herring stocks have been outlined by EU Commission. They could prevent the import of herring into the European Union (EU), prevent vessels that fish for herring landing into the EU, and prevent EU vessels from going to fish for herring in Faroese waters.
The commission is preparing further legal advice on similar sanctions in relation to mackerel on both Iceland and Faroe. It will also seek an early meeting to discuss the situation with the new Icelandic Government.
