The Federation of Icelandic Fishing Vessel Owners criticized the official application to join the European Union as “a long, costly process” that will ultimately fail.
“In general the reaction [among members] has been of massive disappointment,” said Sigurdur Sverrisson, head of corporate communications at Federation of Icelandic Fishing Vessel Owners.
“This was possibly inevitable but we have maintained over time that you don’t need to enter negotiations with the EU to realize what a membership will do for you.”
Sverrisson referred to the unsuccessful application from Norway in 1972 and 1994, where the decision over membership was rejected in a nationwide referendum.
