Intensive cod fishing off the Icelandic coastline is reducing the relative fitness of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) adapted for shallow- compared to deep-water living, and could lead to a rapid decline in the population of the fishery, a study in the scientific journal PLoS One claimed.

Shallow water-dwelling cod had 8 percent of the fitness of deep-water fish, to the extent fishing pressures are changing the genetic characteristics of cod found off the coast, according to scientists at the University of Iceland and Marine Research Institute in Reykjavik.
