Proposals to pass sanctions against 'anyone acting irresponsibly in terms of damaging fish stock sustainability' were swept through the European Union’s Fisheries Committee today.

Irish MEP Pat ‘the Cope’ Gallagher’s list of proposals are intended to bring the issue of Iceland’s and Faroe Islands’ refusal to recognize the European Union and Norway management of the mackerel stock over recent years, and scientific advice, by setting themselves massive quotas last year, and again for 2012.

The sanctions could result in an immediate cessation of imports of all fish and fish products from Iceland and Faroes into the European Union, including cod and salmon.
