A global salmon slump is driving Tasmanian-based salmon producer Huon to focus on feeding the Australian market instead.
Huon’s domestic sales have jumped by 28 percent year-on-year, and the company, which had sales of AUD 140 million (€110.7 million/$142.4 million) last year, attributes this to a fast-growing sushi and sashimi business boom.
“Japanese-style restaurants have increased over the years, and these restaurants want a superior product,” Huon's CEO Peter Bender told IntraFish.
The focus on the domestic market in the next two to three years reflects the same strategy as another Australian salmon producer, Tassal, whose profits suffered amid the global salmon glut.
