Last year, commercial salmon fishermen caught one million pounds of wild California king salmon, a 75 percent decrease from the 2005 catch of 4.3 million pounds.
Last year’s season was shortened to protect weaker Klamath River salmon stocks. But those stocks have rebounded and restrictions were eased this year by the Pacific Fisheries Management Council (PFMC), a regulatory body that manages the Pacific fishing season.
This year the season goes through Sept. 30 and is closed for the month of June, said David Goldenberg, CEO of the California Salmon Council.
