Higher than expected mortalities, disease, and weak growth of some fish all contributed to higher production costs for Norway Royal Salmon over the second quarter this year.
The company reported production costs of around NOK 30 (€3.8/$5.1) per kg in southern Norway and NOK 25 (€3.2/$4.2) per kg in northern Norway during the second quarter of 2013.
"A production cost of NOK 29.9 (€3.8/$5.1) in southern Norway is an extremely weak result," John Binde CEO of Norway Royal Salmon, told IntraFish.
"However this is due to a high rate of mortalities at one farm site following algae blooms there last year," he said.
