High Liner, based in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, has made no secret of its plans to further consolidate the seafood business in the United States.

The company acquired Malden, Mass-based Viking Seafoods in December last year and has openly stated its interest in acquiring Icelandic USA, Icelandic Group’s U.S. division.

“There is a need for consolidation in the U.S. industry,” said Keith Decker, president and chief operating officer of High Liner’s U.S. business.

“Our customers are becoming more consolidated, so we need to follow,” Decker told IntraFish, alluding to the higher level of consolidation in the U.S.
