Spakenburg Paling BV smokes eels by hand using traditional methods stretching back hundreds of years, but while the techniques are old fashioned, its products exploit the Internet to interest and educate younger buyers.
The high-end smoker uses its Web address -- paling.nl -- as the primary product name on its packaging (paling means eel in Dutch) and Director Alex Koelewijn said there was a noticeable spike in Web traffic around mealtimes.
“People go online to find recipes when they’ve bought the food,” Koelewijn told IntraFish, which visited the company’s plant in the town of Spakenburg, the Netherlands on Wednesday.
