Dutch shrimp firm Heiploeg is filing an appeal against the  €27 million ($36.9 million) fine slapped on the group by the European Commission last week for taking part in operating a shrimp cartel, the company said Friday.

In addition, it is exploring legal possibilities to claim potential damages with people responsible.

The European Commission announced in late November it fined four North Sea shrimp suppliers a total of more than €28.7 million ($39.2 million) for operating a cartel, fix prices and share sales volumes between June 2009 and January 2009.
