On a press trip organized last November by Dutch Seafood Marketing Board Visbureau, there was little to see at the Rotterdam site, aside from shiny blue nursery tanks and elongated concreted ponds housed under the 5,000 square meter complex’s glasshouse.
But things have moved on. The ponds now have 600,000 vannamei shrimp swimming in them – the largest measuring 10 centimeters and weighing around 7 grams.
“Product will reach the market in November,” said Happy Shrimp Director Gilbert Curtessi.
Seafood wholesaler Schmidt Zeevis, which supplies a network of 600 restaurants, has already snapped up all of the Happy Shrimp’s initial 60 to 90 tons production.
