Prices for halibut are on the rise again as inventories dwindle from already bare stocks.

Although harvest levels in April and early May were up compared to 2013, catch rates have slowed and any fish landed seems to go straight into the fresh market, buyers and processors told IntraFish.

And fishermen are now focusing on black cod and preparing for the salmon season. "The halibut quota is down far enough that it's almost a bycatch, while fishermen are targeting black cod," said Charles McEldowney, plant manager at Icicle Seafood's Seward site.
