At the International Pacific Halibut Commission’s (IPHC) interim meeting on Nov. 28, IPHC staff will take on a new role in the harvest catch limit discussions.
Instead of establishing a specific catch limit recommendation for the halibut harvest season as usual, staff will be hammering out a range of recommendations as part of the new risk-based decision making plan. They will be displayed in a table format for the commission and stakeholders to use when deciding the catch limit.
“It remains to be seen how the commission handles it,” Gregg Williams, a biologist with the IPHC, told IntraFish.
