Protests are planned for Wednesday and Thursday and will be supported by the Federation of Unemployed Salmon Workers and the Association of Indigenous Groups.

The groups are protesting what they say is the “contamination of the water where they work and extreme unemployment” in the southern part of Chiloe Island.

The Association of Mussel Farmers of Quellon released a statement slamming the “bioterrorism of salmon farming companies and government bodies, after it was proven that wellboats that ship live salmon from Region 11, whose waters are contaminated with algal blooms, are dumping the deadly microalgae Alexandrium catenella in waters off the south of Chiloe island in Region 10.”
