Skalaberg was built in 2003 for Faroese operator JFK and designed for the factory deck to be able to process a variety of products, including niche products from what would otherwise be waste material.

JFK sold the ship in 2009 to an operator in Argentina, and last year it was acquired by Icelandic company Brim Seafood for €21.8 million ($28.1 million).

The 10,000hp, 74.50-meter factory trawler has been undergoing a refit and a repaint in Las Palmas. It keeps its original name, with the addition of the RE-7 registration number.
