The China Tuna Industry Group (CTIG) chose not to attend the 11th regular session of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) meeting in Samoa, Greenpeace pointed out in a statement.
Wang Haibo, ocean campaigner at Greenpeace, accused the group of "chickening out."
CTIG was told to attend the WCPFC by China’s Ministry of Agriculture after CTIG’s initial public offer (IPO) stalled on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in September, Greenpeace alleged.
In its draft IPO prospectus, the company assured potential investors that it and other Chinese fishing companies "need not comply with catch limits set by international fisheries organizations, and that non-compliance penalties were non-existent or not upheld," the green NGO said.
