“Greenpeace is of the opinion that no fully credible certification program for sustainable wild-caught or farmed seafood currently exists. So far, the challenges facing our oceans are far from being tackled and the fundamental principles of precaution and ecosystem approach are not yet incorporated into fisheries management,” the NGO said in two separate reports last month, one covering U.K.-based MSC, the other Italy-based FOS.
Using a “tool” it says was developed by someone with knowledge of what it deems “ethical” certification systems such as the Forest Stewardship Council, Greenpeace says the measurement device tracks how well various the certification programs can help to deliver Greenpeace’s vision for healthy oceans, which it defines as a network of marine reserves covering 40 percent of the world’s oceans, with sustainable and fair use of the remaining 60 percent.
