Greenpeace is asking UK fishing industry organizations for views on and support for its proposed Manifesto for Fair Fisheries.
The manifesto is unequivocally on the side of the small-boat inshore sector, which the environmental group says fishes sustainably with little environmental impact and supports many fishing communities.
It calls for the European Union's reformed Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), scheduled for implementation next year, to give priority access to fishing opportunities for the inshore sector.
The green group has been working with UK inshore fishermen's group, NUTFA, and other fishermen’s associations, as well as individual fishermen to develop its manifesto and influence the CFP reform.
As well as its links to NUTFA, the Greenpeace manifesto and a declaration of its support for low-impact sustainable fisheries is signed by 23 named inshore fishermen’s organizations, almost all in the southwest, southeast and south of England.
