Greenland is hoping to claim a coastal state status with regards to North East Atlantic mackerel, since the migratory species swam into its waters this summer, a move European Union (EU) industry representatives oppose.

“Greenland under the present conditions simply can’t afford to refrain from, at least, trying to get its share of the mackerel,” said Henrik Leth, chairman of Polar Seafoods, a Greenlandic seafood producer.

In 2011, more than 92 percent of Greenland’s export income came from the sale of fish and crustaceans.
