The Lorient-based company, a subsidiary of the French supermarket chain Intermarche, says its own activities would stand up to MSC criteria, as the MSC assessment includes no evaluations of social conditions and doesn't mention quality.

“These are the main reasons we haven’t followed the MSC route, even though we are capable of being MSC-certified,” Maela Bourdet of company’s quality service department told Fishing News International.

“Social issues such as earnings, safety standards, time off and working conditions all have to be included and quality also needs to be included.”
