The US Senate Appropriations Committee narrowly voted Thursday to add a requirement to label all genetically-modified (GM) salmon; the legislation now moves to the US Senate for a vote, reported the San Francisco Chronicle.

The amendment, introduced by Alaska Senators Lisa Murkowski and Mark Begich, passed on a 15-14 vote in the committee.

"Members of Alaska's congressional delegation, as well as the state legislature, have opposed any effort by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that would clear the way for the approval of a genetically engineered salmon for human consumption," the newspaper reported.
