Independent environmental experts have advised the Gibraltar Government to maintain its ban on commercial fishing in British Gibraltar territorial waters.

As reported by Gibraltar Chronicle the experts said a shortage of knowledge about the size of fish stocks and catches required “a precautionary approach” to marine management.

They said that there should be no commercial fishing within British Gibraltar territorial waters “until such uncertainties have been resolved and a suitable management plan is in place if clarification provides sufficient evidence that a fishery is sustainable as part of a wider regional process.”

The recommendation was contained in the long-awaited fishing report commissioned by the Gibraltar Government last year and published this morning after it was tabled in Parliament.

But in presenting the report, the Gibraltar Government hinted that some fishing activity could be allowed in the future under certain conditions.
