Germans are eating less fish as prices get significantly more expensive, new data by Hamburg-based the Fisch-Informationszentrum (FIZ) suggests.

Suppliers who sold to Germany in 2012 made a mint, FIZ said in the market report. While food prices jumped 3.4 percent on average in 2012, shoppers had to pay a lot more for fish and seafood.

Prices in retail and foodservice rose 5 percent, and consumers had to spend a premium of 12 percent over the previous year. 

Reasons for the jump are higher raw material prices and rising costs of processing, FIZ said in the report.

The
