Greenpeace had harsh words for FOS’s certification of the menhaden fishery, used by U.S.-based Omega Protein, the world’s largest maker of omega-3 fish oils for human consumption.
Greenpeace derided the fact that Omega Protein uses industrial-scale harvest operations and spotter planes, as well as processes fish for uses other than human consumption.
FOS shot back Wednesday, saying that Menhaden is not on Greenpeace’s red list, and is in fact managed sustainably.
“In fact, several fisheries are industrial scale. This does not mean they cannot be sustainable,” FOS said in a letter to IntraFish.
