A review of 676 menu items between July and December found calamari, shrimp and fish all making the top 10 list for most-offered fried appetizers.
Calamari was fourth on the list, with 9.6 percent menu penetration, said Illinois-based Technomic.
That was just ahead of shrimp, which was found on 8.7 percent of menus. Fried fish was 10th on the list, at 1.7 percent.
