The average export price of fresh Chilean salmon was down by 30 percent in January and February this year compared to the same period last year.

Export data from TechnoPress show that the FOB prices of Chilean fresh salmon -- probably fillets -- averaged $6.50 (€4.96) per kilo in January and February 2012.

That’s down from $9.30 (€7.09) per kilo in the same period last year.

Fortunately for Chilean producers, three quarters of their salmon is sold as frozen. The price for the latter has proved much more resilient, with the average price stable from last year at $5.90
