A deal between the European Commission and the Mauritanian government will result in no take up from European freezer trawlers, Gerard van Balsfoort, president of the Pelagic Freezer-trawler Association (PFA).

All EU pelagic freezer trawler owners “strongly condemn” the value and rationale of the new Fisheries Protocol agreement, signed July 26 between the EC and the Mauritanian government in Nouakchott.

Under the deal, the EU fleet will not be allowed to fish within 20 miles of the Mauritanian coastline.

Much of the fishing is done between 13 and 20 miles, van Balsfoort told IntraFish.
