France is still the largest importer of raw material surimi in Europe, importing 19,854 metric tons in 2012, equating to 44 percent of all imports.
However, according to Jean-Luc Beliveau, R&D director for Alliance Oceane, this is a drop from 2011 when imports were 23,940 metric tons and 2013 is likely to fall even further.
“Imports were slower in 2012, and we saw the market go down,” he said.
Overall the French market decreased 3 percent in 2012, and this trend has been ongoing in 2013, with the market currently down 7 percent.
