Salmon sales in France could be the first ones to suffer due to higher Atlantic salmon prices seen so far this year, Philippe Barbe, general manager at the country's biggest salmon importer, Direct Ocean, told IntraFish.

"The higher prices of Norwegian salmon will mean a reduction in consumption, unfortunately," he said. "We have passed the €5 ($6.60) level this week which is a level affecting consumption. I think it's going to slow down."

A definite reason for a decline in consumption could be that fewer and fewer retailers are choosing to promote salmon through discounts and sales.
