After a decades-long career as a seafood retail expert at top retailers such as Tesco and Safeway, Gary Hooper is finally realizing what he calls “a lifelong ambition” — opening up his own fishmonger shop in Bedfordshire, England.
Along with his 19-year-old son, George, who has been involved in the industry since he was just six and has also worked in seafood at Tesco for the past three years, Hooper is officially opening the doors to GCH Fishmongers on July 29 — and it’s a monumental moment not just for him, but for the town of Bedfordshire, as well.
“There’s not been [an independent] fishmonger in Bedford in probably 10 years,” Hooper told Seafood International, adding that the only options are supermarkets. “There used to be seven in town during the heyday.”
