Vic spent his boyhood summers in Astoria, Ore., working in basic areas of the seafood industry under the supervision of his older brother, Ed.
From age 13 he unloaded fishing boats, worked on trawlers, crab and shrimp boats, even with horses pulling nets of salmon off the sandbars in the Columbia River. He also worked at NW Cold Storage moving ice blocks.
Following college and WWII, Vic returned to Astoria and again worked with his brother, gradually taking responsibility until he was managing Sebastian Stuart’s processing plant in Astoria.
