Foppen -- which processes fish in two plants in the Netherlands and one in Greece -- halted all production of smoked salmon since last Thursday to investigate the cause of the salmonella outbreak.
Around 300 people -- 200 in the Netherlands and 100 in the United States -- were last reported to have fallen ill after consuming smoked salmon products infected with the salmonella bacteria, according to the Netherland's National Institute for Public Health (RIVM).
This number is expected to rise significantly, and is only the "tip of the iceberg," a spokesperson at RIVM told IntraFish.
