Anton Dekker, vice chairman of the Dutch Fishermen's Organization and former skipper, questioned quality control of the fish under the scheme and suggested alternatives were now favored among the country’s fishermen.
“MSC fish can be rubbish. It doesn’t account for quality, only sustainability,” Dekker told IntraFish during a tour of the Scheveningen auction.
He said buyers at the auction do not want to accept fish purely on the basis on its MSC certification since, while it can be good quality, there is too much variability.
