The only answer is for consumers somehow to be persuaded to eat more fish, which means supermarkets reducing prices and running promotions on staple species such as cod and haddock.
It also means the industry highlighting the health of stocks and the many initiatives under way aimed at responsible fishing said Martyn Boyers, chief executive of Grimsby Fish Dock Enterprises (GFDE).
He said the trade was faced with an unprecedented glut of fish that had pushed cod prices down to prices comparable with 20 years ago, with haddock prices also very low.
