The Bergen, Norway-based exchange, which allows buyers and sellers to make forward contracts for farmed salmon, expects some 30,000 metric tons of fish worth more than NOK 620 million (€80 million/$114 million) will be traded on the exchange by the end of 2007.

"To get the first members was quite a challenge," Marketing Manager Birgitte Sorheim told IntraFish. "People didn't understand the role of Fish Pool at first."

The exchange, which opened in May 2006, registered its 100th member recently, and boasts marquis seafood and financial industry players, including smoked salmon giant Alfesca; Polish smokehouses Morpol and Suempol; salmon farmers Marine Harvest and Grieg Seafood; and financiers Carnegie and First Securities.
