Increasingly discontent salmon farmers in Norway signaled to feed producers last week they wanted to source feed made from raw material from only quota- and science-backed fisheries, yet the continuing feud between Norway and Iceland over the Atlantic mackerel fishery complicates the definition of sustainable meal.
Iceland manages the fisheries in its own exclusive economic zone (EEZ), and decides on its own quotas based on the country’s research. Norway disagrees with the management strategy and wants Iceland to place stricter regulations on mackerel fishing.
