The 14,000 metric ton quota is spilt between the pelagic fleet, which has the largest share of 11,335 metric tons, while freezer vessels and other vessels each have a 1300 metric tons.

There has been a longstanding dispute between the Faroe Islands, Norway and the EU over the allocation of mackerel quotas, as all of them push for a higher share of the quota and the Faroese have long held out that their 5% share, giving their fleet a 30,000 metric ton quota this year, is unjustifiably small compared to the zonal attachment of mackerel to Faroese waters.
