Vestergaard’s announcement places an immediate pressure on the Norwegian and European Union governments to reach an agreement with Iceland on its mackerel fisheries this year, as the alternative is to see fishing as a whole on mackerel increased by a further 100,000 metric tons.

He said that this potential Faroese quota would not be less than the present quota set by Iceland for a 130,000 metric ton fishery this year.

Faroese pelagic operators and Felagid Notaskip, the association that represents them, are against leaving the present agreement between coastal states on mackerel that gives them the opportunity to fish outside the Faroese exclusive economic zone (EEZ) when the fish are at their most valuable.
