In a surprise move during talks in London, the Faroese delegation announced it would withdraw from the international agreement on management of Atlanto-Scandian herring to set its own unilateral quotas.
The remaining parties to the agreement, the European Union (EU), Iceland, Russia and Norway decided to continue with the management plan and set aside the 32,000 metric tons -- otherwise allocated as the Faroese share of the 619,000 metric tons of total allowable catch (TAC).
Describing the Faroese as "acting like pirates," Ian Gatt, chief executive of the Scottish Pelagic Fishermen’s Association, said: “This is totally irresponsible behavior by the Faroe Islands for which there is absolutely no justification."
