This was one of the conclusions drawn by Kolbjorn Giskeodegaard, senior analyst at Nordea, when he gave a keynote speech on white fish trends at a seminar held recently in Trondheim, Norway.
“It would also appear as though it is the salmon that has accounted for growth in seafood consumption in Europe,” he said. “Imports of fresh, whitefish to the EU are on the rise, but Norway is marginalized as a supplier of fillet to Europe."
The EU is managing to a lesser degree to cover its own demand for white fish, and it is the imports from China and Vietnam that have prevented the whitefish market in Europe from declining.
