Once touted a viable alternative to bass and bream, farmed meagre is yet to reach its potential. That will change in the coming years, industry players told IntraFish.

"Meagre is a developing species," said Maria Kotsovou, group marketing manager of Greek farmer Nireus.

"Currently it is not an important species, but in a couple of years a lot more will be produced -- right now it is not enough to affect [any producer's] top or bottom line," she told IntraFish.

Meagre (Argyrosomus regius) is found in the wild along the Eastern Atlantic from Norway south to Gibraltar and Congo, including the Mediterranean and Black Sea.
