Based in Barstadvik, on the western coast of Norway, Profunda started off as a cod farmer but decided to swap the fish for salmon in 2010 after the farmed cod market all but collapsed.

Since then, the company has obtained licenses to also farm halibut and wrasse and now it is applying for permission to farm lumpfish juveniles and broodstock as well. It already has licenses to operate hatcheries and produce broodstock and juveniles for cod and halibut.

The group expects to produce up to 1,000 metric tons of lumpfish broodstock and around 600,000 lumpfish fry a year.
