As the salmon prices soared above NOK 45 (€5.00/$6.79) in May, salmon processors and smokers saw margins disappear and raw material costs spiral.
Though prices have begun to ease slightly the past week, analysts are predicting above average rates well into the year. Meanwhile, prices continue to set new records ( here, here) throughout 2009.
Across the European industry, from major players to smaller outfits, many processors said the situation had become extremely difficult.
“It's a big concern for Alfesca today because we are suffering a lot in terms of loss of margin due to the high price of the raw material of salmon,” Alfesca CEO Xavier Govare told IntraFish.
